Reagan and Alzheimer's

From time to time we get emails from irate Reagan fans accusing us of making fun of Ronald Reagan because he suffered from Alzheimer's. Anyone who even just glances at our site should know that that is not the case. We make fun of politicians (Republicans and Democrats), and their media cheerleaders, corporations and policies that feed the war machine while ordinary Americans are asked to tighten their belts and go without affordable health care, adequate public education for our children and funding for a social security safety net for our seniors.

Over the years I've heard proposals to carve Reagan's head onto Mt. Rushmore and to replace Jefferson on the nickel. Today every Republican wants to be Ronald Reagan and many Democrats (including Obama) invoke his name as if he were a national hero.

The truth is that I did not come up with the name of our political satire group myself, I lifted it from the 80's comedy Airplane II. In that film an escaped patient from the Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane highjack's a plane. They were not making fun of Reagan's Alzheimer's in the 80's and we are not doing that now.

The screen writers for that 80's film thought that it was fitting that the President that cut funding for the nation's mental institutions and turned tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of the mentally ill onto the streets should be honored with having a mental institution named after him. But not just any mental institution, one that holds the "criminally insane".

Reagan, himself was always a little screwy. According to the FBI, in the 1950's Reagan would report people to them as being communists on a regular basis. What was the evidence that he used? Apparently Reagan had the ability to tell if someone was a communist by the way they shook his hand. In the 1980's, while he was president, he believed that the movies he starred in were real life and not just movies.

However it is not really Reagan's personal mental state which we make fun of but the "criminally insane" policies of the administration of which he was the figure head. The Reagan Administration provided funding, training, and political support and cover for death squads, apartheid, dictators and terrorists who killed hundreds of thousands of people in Latin America, Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East. Some of the biggest messes that we find ourselves in today can be traced back to the Reagan Administration. Remember, it was the Reagan Administration that armed Saddam Hussein and recruited, funded and trained Osama bin Ladin and his holy warriors in Afghanistan.

So if anyone genuinely believes that we are making fun of people with Alzheimer's, I am sorry that you got that impression. Although I never would have imagined that anyone could equate Alzheimer's with being "criminally insane". I hope that it is clear that we are lampooning the Reagan Administration's policies and all policies that punish and scapegoat the poor while providing corporate welfare and tax cuts to the super rich. We are poking fun at politicians, like Reagan, that talk to us about democracy and freedom while they give a wink and a nod to dictators, terrorists and death squads.

Peace,

Warden, Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane

P.S. My heart and support went out to Nancy Reagan when she stood up against the Bush Administration, the Republican Party and the religious right in favor of stem cell research. In the 1980's her husband's administration pandered to the religious right and stood in the way of AIDS research in very much the same way. Hopefully someday politics and ideology will not stand in the way of finding cures for horrible diseases that cause so much suffering for both the patient and the family members.
