Halliburton's going away party
Jeff Grubler of the Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane just got back from Texas and Halliburton's annual shareholder meeting where he helped put together a "Take the Money and Run going away party" for Halliburton which is moving its headquarters to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
A big thank you to everyone who provided him with financial support for the trip to Houston. It was your money that bought the supplies and props for the protest.

The meeting was held on a secluded resort called The Woodlands (which is about 40 minutes outside of Houston). The Houston activists and I were joined by folks from the community where the resort is located as well as activists who drove in from Dallas, the Crawford Peace House and other places in Texas. We met with the Woodlands police the day before and they were convinced that we were going to bring hundreds of Black Block style anarchists that were going to try and take over the golf course. A nice cinematic image but not what we were planning. They tried to put us in a "Free Expression Area" which meant a pen on a parking lot inside the resort far away from the convention center and everything else surrounded by cops and swat team snipers on a cherry picker and hiding in the woods.
Once in the "Free Expression Area" the activists were prevented from leaving. With a phone call to the Woodlands' Police Captain we were able to free the imprisoned activists from the "Free Expression Area" and set up on a tree lined median in front of the resort entrance. This was not an optimal situation either but everything up there is private property owned by the Woodlands Corporation. This however did not prevent us from throwing Halliburton a damn fine going away party.
So, in short we kicked Halliburton's ass. You might not know this but Halliburton lost their oil sector reconstruction contracts in Iraq and KBR is going to lose much of its military support contracts in Iraq. The reason for this is they did a horrible job. In the past no matter how many times they were caught with their pants down (bribery, price gauging, bid rigging, fraud and not fixing what they say they had) they still kept getting more contracts. This has changed and it's because of our protests and the work of Congressman Henry Waxman, whistle blowers and government auditors with the courage to stand up to their superiors and investigative journalists and countless others who believe in corporate accountability. This is not to say that Halliburton is not going to get anymore contracts or that they are going to give back all the money that they swindled from the Iraqis and us but it is a major victory.
One thing I should mention in my reportback is the work of Pratap Chatterjee. Pratap is the editing director of http://www.corpwatch.org. Corpwatch just put out a new report on Halliburton which was indispensable to our organizing.
Not only is Pratap a corporate watchdog and investigative journalist he is also a shareholder in Halliburton. His one share in Halliburton enables him to attend the shareholder meetings where he gets to publicly ask the CEO tough questions. Almost every story published on the shareholder's meeting was centered around his questioning. As you know, Halliburton is moving its headquarters to Dubai (really just its CEO and about 12 other executives - yes its a scam). Well, here's a surprise for Halliburton, Pratap is moving to Dubai with them. I love that guy. So at some point if you are looking for a worthy cause to donate to write a check to corpwatch.org
